In 1852 he became master of the ship "Sarah Parker" and sailed from New Bedford, Mass., to the Pacific Coast. Gardner's wife, Charlotte Coffin Gardner, and their son accompanied him on this journey, and another son was born in San Francisco before their return to Nantucket in 1855.
